Currency , Cash & Credit Cards
The currency of Honduras is the Lempira, however US dollars are widely accepted on Roatan, so there’s no need to obtain Lempiras for your vacation here. If you use US dollars, make sure the bills are new or in excellent shape, as worn and torn US bills are not accepted by any banks on Roatan, so people and businesses don’t like to take them either. It’s also a good idea to bring smaller denominations ($20 or less) versus larger bills, as change for cash purchases is typically given in Lempiras, and some businesses don’t keep large amounts of cash on hand.
Should you need additional cash while you’re here, there are several bank at the Mega Plaza “mall” (about 5 minutes east of Barefoot Cay), where Lempiras can be withdrawn from an ATM. While there a number of ATMs around the island, we recommend that you only use ATMs that are located within a bank, as other machines have been subject to fraud.
Please be sure to inform your credit card company that you will be travelling to Honduras, in order to assure smooth processing of your transactions.
Exploring Roatan
Our front desk staff are happy to assist with arranging private taxi service and guided tours. If you’d prefer to venture our to explore the island on your own, rental cars can also be arranged. While 24 hours’ notice is typically sufficient for our front desk staff to secure rental car arrangements, during dates surrounding major holidays (Christmas/New Year’s, and the week before Easter), it’s recommended that you reserve a vehicle prior to your vacation.
Most of the nightlife on Roatan is in the West End and West Bay areas, about 30 and 45 minutes away, respectively. For visitors who want continual nightlife within walking distance, those areas might be a better location for you. But we find that many guests love going out to explore various parts of Roatan, and then come back to their little refuge here at the resort.
